The Fry Word Lists are composed of 1000 words divided into 40 numbered lists. These words are widely recognized as the most common words found in printed materials. They are ranked according to how often they appear in print (not in order of increasing difficulty). According to Fry's 1996 research:
- the first 25 words make up about 1/3 of all words published.
- the first 100 words make up 1/2 of all the words found in publications.
- the first 300 words make up 2/3 of all written materials.
Our class spelling program will focus on mastering the the first 200 words. Students will work through their list each week. Once they master their list by getting a sticker on their Friday dictation they will precede to the next list. I will be posting fun activities they can do at home with their words to acquire mastery.
